How To Setup A Tent
August 10, 2024 - Like so many more things that we do in life, the more times you set up a tent the easier it gets. If you have never setup a tent before, then it would be good to practice setting your tent up in your back yard before you head out on your camping adventure. You might even decide to sleep overnight in your screened tent in yourown backyard just to help you think of things you might need to carry with you when you go camping. When you get to your camp site and you are tired, or it is perhaps after dark then having some practice will make your tent setup less frustrating. In addition, once you have setup one type of camping tent, then it will be easier to set up another type of tent, be that dome tents or large family camping tents.
Once you have reached your campsite then pick an area that is flat and clear of any rocks and sticks that might puncture your tent floor or be uncomfortable to sleep on.
Unfold your tent and lay it in the cleared area and make sure the tent door is facing the direction you want. Think about where the sun rises and if you want to see the sunrise when you open your tent door each morning. If your camping tent has a mesh roof and the weather is pretty, then you may want to leave the rainfly off so you can view the beautiful stars in the evening. If your tent has a screened porch then think about the fact that you may want to sleep in the screen room area if the weather is pleasant.
Unpack your camping tent and all of its parts. Sort them into groups; tent stakes, tent poles, rain fly and so on. If the place where you plan to pitch your tent has hard ground then you may want to purchase some heavy duty tent stakes made particularly for hard ground.
If your camping tent has a ground cloth or tent footprint, lay that down first. Next, stake down your tent, making sure to pull the floor of the tent fairly taut as you do so. Large camping tents almost always have to be staked down, but some backpacking tents do not.
Connect your poles. Most tents today come color-coded to make connection easier.
Slide your tent poles through the sleeves on the outside of the tent and then attach the body of the tent to the poles via clips.
Most standard camping tents are not waterproof. They come with a waterproof cover called a rain-fly that secures over the top of the tent to protect it from the rain. Securing your rainfly usually involves fastenting the corners of the rain-fly to cords that attach to the base of the tent, and may include additional clips or ties that attach to the tent poles.
Tent camping can be a lot of fun, so select a good tent and hit the road.
